Neeraj Chopra: The chain breaker

Saturday finally marked the end of a long wait for the precious Olympic gold medal with Neeraj Chopra’s impressive javelin throw of 87.58meters. This is India’s second individual gold win after Abhinav Bindra in 2008. Not only this, it is also india’s (free- india) first individual medal in a track-and-field event. Neeraj Chopra was himself unsure about the gold medal despite his confident performance in the qualification round.

The 23-year-old Javelin thrower has created history by winning a gold in athletics which no Indian has done since 1900. His first throw was 87.03 m followed by 87.58 and then third measured at 76.79m. With this he made into top 8 who threw thrice again. With next two “no- throw”, Neeraj threw javelin for the 6th time winning gold for the country measured at 84.24m.
